Job Summary
The Controller position is a highly analytical leadership position which requires construction accounting experience, attention to detail, and strong financial reporting skills. This position owns the accounting function of the company: the monthly close and financial statements, work-in-progress (WIP) and job cost reporting, cash forecasting, billing and receivables oversight, and leadership of the accounting team. The Controller will be responsible for managing the accounting team in processing all daily transactions in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner, and for reviewing that work rather than performing it.

SUMMARY OF POSITION ROLE/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Controller is responsible for managing the daily accounting activities, including general ledger, AP, AR, and payroll, through the accounting team. The position owns the company’s financial statements, the monthly WIP schedule and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, job cost reporting, and cash forecasting. The Controller is responsible for cost control and budget compliance, as well as the development of and adherence to documented accounting policies and internal controls, and partners with project managers on job-level financial performance and with the CFO on forecasting, banking, surety, and strategy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB AND THE PERCENTAGE OF TIME SPENT ON EACH FUNCTION

- 20% – Own the month-end close and financial statements: manage the closing calendar and deliver monthly financial statements (income statement, balance sheet statement of cash flows) review ready to the CFO on a consistent schedule.
- 15% – Prepare the monthly WIP schedule and job cost reporting: percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, over/under billing analysis, margin fade review, and job cost reviews with project managers.
- 15% – Leadership, management, and training of the accounting team (AR, AP, Payroll): set standards for timely, accurate, and documented daily posting of subsidiary accounting systems, and reviewing the team’s output.
- 10% – Cash management and forecasting: maintain a rolling 13-week cash forecast, manage optimal vendor payment timing, and monitor daily cash position and bank activity.
- 10% – Billing and receivables oversight: AIA progress billings (G702/G703), retainage tracking, collections, lien waiver management, and lien rights deadlines.
- 10% – Monthly balance sheet reconciliations with supporting documentation, to be signed by CFO.
- 5% – Review and audit of payroll, payroll taxes, certified payroll where applicable, and benefit instruments.
- 5% – Development, communication, and enforcement of accounting policies, internal controls, and segregation of duties, subject to CFO approval.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB AND THE PERCENTAGE OF TIME SPENT ON EACH FUNCTION
List each marginal function and assign a percentage based on the amount of time spent on that function.
Marginal Functions should not exceed 10% in total.

- 10% – Process and system improvement, including optimization of the construction ERP (Foundation), and other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION
Explain the type and extent of instructions or directions normally given to this position by the immediate supervisor AND list the class titles and position numbers of positions under the direct supervision of this position.
- This position manages the AR Specialist, AP Specialist, and Payroll Specialist
- Works closely with Purchasing and project management; Purchasing does not report to this position, preserving segregation of duties between procurement and payment approval
NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE
Specify days and hours this position is required to work as well as any variations from this schedule (ex: on call, shift rotations, seasonal extended hours, travel, etc.)
- Monday – Friday 7:00AM-4:00PM, in office (additional hours as needed during month-end close and year-end)
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
- 5+ years of progressive construction accounting experience, including 2+ years as a Controller or Assistant Controller for a commercial contractor
- Demonstrated ownership of percentage-of-completion accounting, WIP reporting, and job costing
- Construction ERP proficiency required; Foundation strongly preferred
- Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency
- Ability to present financial results clearly to non-financial leaders
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA or CCIFP designation
- Experience with an electrical or MEP subcontractor
- Experience preparing bank, surety, and insurance audit reporting packages
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW.
- CPA or CCIFP preferred but not required
POLICY MAKING AND/OR INTERPRETATION.
- This position develops documents, and enforces accounting policies, internal controls, and guidelines, subject to CFO approval.
COMMUNICATION
Statement of internal and external business contact, including frequency and scope.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required (oral, written, and public speaking/presentations). Regular contact with project managers, vendors, and customers, and with the company’s bank, surety, insurance auditors, and external CPA firm, under the direction of the CFO.
